A study has found that peole with high levels of the hormone called dopamine in their brain, may be prone to addictive behavior. Those found to have a sensitivity to this hormone, tend to be risk takers that can lead to drug abuse and gambling.
Partly because of their lower sensitivity to dopamine, Scientists from Denmark and Japan said they had proved in research that a need for stimulation is greater on average for these people. The brains of healthy volunteers were scanned to look at dopamine and dopamine receptor levels and this study was published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS) journal.
People at the higher end of the scale get less effect from the same amount of dopamine as people lower on the scale, said Albert Gjedde of the Copenhagen University. These finding just might help to find way to treat addictive behavior and shed new light on ADHD. finding suggest it could be an idea to increase or decrease levels of dopamine itself instead of blocking the receptors. AstraZeneca’s Seroquel works by blocking the action of dopamine in the brain and is a glass of drugs known as anti psychotics.
